- Little secret about Tamales Mi Lupitas–don’t get the tamales. Al pastor tacos are where it’s at!
After my recent trip to a vegan Mexican restaurant, I was in dire need of some meat. Thanks to yelp, I came across this little taco cart in the Fruitvale hood of Oakland. It was known to have killer al pastor, and Anthony Bourdain had even visited it on his last trip to the Bay Area for his show, No Reservations. Pork and Bourdain? Why the hell not?!
Heaps of food porn and my take on the meal after the click!

- One menu at Tamales Mi Lupitas. Even looking at it, I’m getting hungry!

- Another more homemade menu at Tamales Mi Lupitas in Oakland.

- A colorful wall provides a nice view in this tiny, cramped parking lot.

- What heaven is made of–juicy, crisp and saucy al pastor tacos. The sauce had a slight bbq flavor to it, and provided a nice contrast to the crispy pork and squirt of fresh lime juice.

- The namesake of the restaurant, the tamales, were not as good. It tasted like they were heated in the microwave, not steamed, and just not very flavorful. These were Salvadorian tamales, however, not to be mistaken with Mexican tamales.

- Pupusas are also a good bet here, and this pork filled pupusa topped with tangy curtido did not disappoint.

- Innards of the pork pupusa.
I also had the pleasure of trying a Salvadorian enchiladas, which is nothing like a Mexican one. It was more similar to a fried tostada topped with delicious beans, cheese, sauce and lettuce. Another must-try at this tiny taco stand.
My recommendation–eat here! Especially if you love pork!
