Gastro Friday: Organizing a tiny kitchen

Gastro Friday: Organizing a tiny kitchen

Welcome to my new, tiny-ass kitchen. I think there is room for a pot. That's about it.

What happens when your apartment and tiny kitchen cannot possibly fit all of your kitchen toys that you NEED to survive? You get creative.

The above photo is my new apartment kitchen. It is not big nor spacious, but the rest of the apartment is, so I had to deal. After doing some research, I found a great website that features innovative small kitchen organization, and specifically fell in love with this particular display.

Did we make this a reality? Or is my Le Creuset pot destined to eat my kitchen? Find out after the jump.

So the good news is…we made it a reality. And by we, I mean my husband, who researched and built this monster, and myself, who dutifully critiqued him along the entire process. I think it is probably a slightly better one than the original picture, but hey, I’m a bit biased. This is the before shot of the wall.

And the after:

After: my awesome organized kitchen wall.

These shelves were bought from Home Depot, and were really easy to put in. We did have to put a brace in the middle underneath each one to give them extra support, but it was worth it.

My shelves, which now store all my dry goods, baking goods, and spices.

We used a basic closet organizer for a pot rack, and basic s hooks to hang utensils and lids off of it. We also bought an additional wall-mounted pot rack, because I have so many pots and pans.

The wall-mounted pot rack and hanging stuff.

And of course, let us not forget the top, which not only holds my massive pots, but also prevents my Le Creuset from eating  my entire kitchen. That’s a score in my book.

Look at my Le Creuset NOT eating my kitchen!

At the end of the day, we spent $100 making this wall, and it was totally worth it. How would you organize a small kitchen?

Leena, your timing is perfect. We're moving into a dorm suite and the kitchen is a kitchette- maybe 3 feet of counter space and tiny cabinets. We have made a choice that wouldn't work for most but we have two bathrooms, we don't need two bathrooms. So instead of a large storage unit we are keeping 90% of my kitchen stuff in plastic tubs in the bathroom we won't use with a tarp over the potty. This makes me sad but unless I want to spoon my pots and pans in the bedroom, we have no choice.
However, I am in awe of how much you fit on the wall and are still able to walk past it!

That, that right there is what I would do. Nicely done!

    Thanks, Becka.

Hey Mia. I understand your setup…as someone who once put a bed in a kitchen of a studio apartment to have a bedroom, I can't really judge (although in my house, we NEED two bathrooms and only have one!) and it makes perfect sense. Check out the website where I found this set up…you may find an affordable solution for your place. I know I was impressed on how many tiny apartment kitchens were able to fit a lot of items in them!

The part I'm not understanding here is how much get-past room you've left once all this is built out. The After photos don't give any idea about that, and if there's no way for somebody (sous-chef, saucier, guest, dog, whoever) to get past the cook, then this setup, for my needs at least, would be made of fail.

Marchbanks~There is plenty of room for more than one cook in the kitchen with this set up, plus a random pet, which makes this the opposite of a fail in my book.

And while we're on the subject, this post was meant to be an inspiration to others, not a step by step guide with exact measurements. Perhaps you were not aware of that?

I agree it's good as inspiration–but if the implementation created a hazard to navigation, then I'd have to mark up a good deal against it, for myself at least. (Thank all the gods that I've lived in the last Pullman kitchen I'll ever have to live with, unless senile dementia and remodeling fever set in at the same time. :)
