When I found this sign on my University’s campus, it made me smile. Of course Easter in Australia is about more than just hot cross buns, the yummy bread that can be found in thousands of Australian homes during the Easter holidays. It is about chocolate hot cross buns too.
And gratuitous amounts of Aussie candy, including Cherry Ripe, a dark chocolate bar stuffed with coconut and cherry.
Keep in mind that I am not of the Easter celebrating persuasion, but since Hindus do not seem to have a holiday that involves getting lots of candy and hot cross buns, I was thinking I could just borrow Easter. I don’t think Jesus would mind too much–he seems like a generous guy, dying for your sins and all that junk. Besides, in this multi-cultural world full of globalization, I feel holidays can not solely be about celebrating your religion, but rather celebrating time together with the people you love. Last time I said that, I got two free Bibles and three offers to help convert me. Jesus and I had a long talk and decided we’d just like to stay friends. So before you offer, I’m all cool in that department. To me, nothing says loving in Australia like Vegemite on toast, just a bit, with heaps of butter.
This, to me, is a proper Aussie Easter brekky.
Have a great holiday! ~LTG
