Once upon a time, I was reading up on Metromix Chicago about new Chicago restaurants and happened upon a Boystown sandwich shop that had a sandwich with chicken liver mousse. I LURVE chicken liver mousse so much, I am willing to spell “love” incorrectly. I screamed, ran around yelling for a bit, and then a bitch went to get her some food, YOU KNOW! The review I had read about the shop put it down for being a little too gay. Um, it’s in Boystown. It is supposed to be gay! Plus, for a “gay” sandwich shop, it was pretty understated. Just a few photos of actresses and singers, and a few sandwiches named after their favorite old actors and show tunes. No biggie. The 7-11 in Boystown is gayer than this shop.
I got the sandwich I had read about, The Marilyn Monroe. It had chicken liver pate, country duck pate & brie on it.
It was pretty delicious, but definitely rich. The duck pate was really really coarse, and it made it difficult to taste the beloved chicken liver mousse. I spoke with the owner though, and apparently, I could come back and order an entire sandwich made out of the mousse. Holla. The man got a braised lamb sandwich with goat cheese, and it was delicious.
The lamb was super tender and the braising jus that was served on top…too much. SO GOOD. It was like a delicious roast lamb dinner with gravy, but on a sandwich. And I loved the bread, a wheat-ish affair. The sandwiches came with the choice of chips or a salad, and I am glad I opted for the latter. There was a variety of homemade salad dressings to choose from, and they kicked ass. The man tried the honey truffle and loved it, and I had the Asian ginger and was equally as impressed. The verdict: delicious, and definitely not TOO gay as one reviewer had suggested. Affordable gourmet.
