If Santa doesn’t swing by my apartment this year, it is probably because in the short time it took him to park his sleigh and get his Venti Caramel Apple Spice from Starbucks, it was buried under several alternating layers of snow and ice, along with a few homeless people (hey, you can’t just leave presents around and NOT expect a few homeless people). But we’re gonna prepare for him anyways. We’ve hung out stockings, strung the lights, and even purchased our own mini rosemary Christmas tree (because it just ain’t the holidays if you can’t eat EVERYTHING).
I’m not hosting any Christmas gatherings this year, but I will be doing my fair share of cooking and baking. Perfect timing too, because it is so arctic in Chicago, baking makes the apartment even cozier. Here is what is on my holiday cooking and baking lists: Christmas Eve Dinner with the Hubby: Seared Grass-finished T-Bone Steaks Potato and Two Cheese Gratin Skillet Greens with Crispy Shallots and Cider Gastrique (from the latest Bon Appetit mag) Christmas Dinner Smoked Ham (I sort of beefed this one up and bought a ham steak instead of the pork butt my mom asked for…sorry, Mom!) Roast Beef with Dijon Sauce (from the latest Bon Appetit) garlic mashed potatoes bacon-roasted brussel sprouts Three kinds of cookies (see my podcast show notes for what they are!) Apple, pear and cranberry five spice crisp with vanilla bean ice cream Most importantly, we are going to dress up Nugget in her yearly Christmas outfit. You may remember her festive outfit from last year’s Aussie Christmas.
This year, lots and lots of bells. I’m pretty stoked. I hope everyone has a great holiday season! ~LTG!
