Dragon fruit

Dragon fruit

Dragon fruit

This is one of the many crazy fruits I can find at the farm stands in the Central Market. This is a dragon fruit, and their bright magenta and green colors always catch my eye. The inside is white with black seeds, and it has the texture of kiwi. But it tastes quite bland, just slightly sweet. It has a sort of indistinguishable flavor. Oh, and just a warning. There was actually no dragon on the inside of this fruit at all. Liars.

According to the net, this is also called pitaya, and is popular in Mexico, Central and South America, as well as Southeast Asian countries, which is probably where mine came from. The fruit actually comes from a few different species of cactus. To eat, chill the fruit, then slice in half and scoop out the insides. Oh, and just a warning?it may turn your pee colors. Could be a plus if you like peeing your name into the snow. I?m just saying. ~LTG

I’ve always been curious about dragon fruit. Sort of a let down that a fruit with such a virile name has a flaccid taste. Pardon the analogy. I still want to try it though, mostly to color my pee.

I was reading another food blog about a month ago.. where this fruit featured. Apparantly the Dragon fruit eaters teeth were badly flecked with the tiny seeds (and what followed was much difficulty cleaning their teeth).. but also the fruit turned their gums/teeth and tongues red.. So it was like they’d done a few rounds in a boxing ring? And they complained about the price! I’ve never tried Dragon fruit.. but I think I would.. just to say I’ve been there and done that. I’m not afraid of experimenting when it comes to food!

It is indeed a gorgeous fruit. The rather mild flesh is lifted slightly with the addition of a little lime juice.

I’ve never seen any colourful effects (oral or elsewhere) from eating dragonfruit.

I believe if you eat dragonfruit your offspring may develop wings and breathe fire… but I might just be making it up.

Anna and Amanda~You guys got way too excited about the pee part. I’m just saying…

Maria~Definitely try it if you get a chance. It might be amazingly delicious, but it is pretty cool to have those bragging rights!

Duncan~I will have to try the lime trick, thanks for it. Will keep you up to date on the whole producing offspring that breathe fire thing. Although they may do that anyways, with my genes…

Does anyone know how to tell if you are getting a red one or a white one? I don’t mind about the subtle taste, because I love the little crunchy seeds. I will try it with the lime juice though. My 5yo also likes them: We cut them into 1cm slices and pop the flesh out.
