Happy Easter, Aussie Style!

Nope. I am pretty sure it is about candy too.

[More:]

When I found this sign on my University's campus, it made me smile. Of course Easter in Australia is about more than just hot cross buns, the yummy bread that can be found in thousands of Australian homes during the Easter holidays.

It is about chocolate hot cross buns too.

Chocolate + bread + a savior= deliciousness

And gratuitous amounts of Aussie candy, including Cherry Ripe, a dark chocolate bar stuffed with coconut and cherry.

Just a bit of the gratuitous candy portion of my holiday.

Damn girl, you look hot. You should take off your coat...

Show me what you're working with!

Keep in mind that I am not of the Easter celebrating persuasion, but since Hindus do not seem to have a holiday that involves getting lots of candy and hot cross buns, I was thinking I could just borrow Easter. I don't think Jesus would mind too much--he seems like a generous guy, dying for your sins and all that junk. Besides, in this multi-cultural world full of globalization, I feel holidays can not solely be about celebrating your religion, but rather celebrating time together with the people you love. Last time I said that, I got two free Bibles and three offers to help convert me. Jesus and I had a long talk and decided we'd just like to stay friends. So before you offer, I'm all cool in that department.

To me, nothing says loving in Australia like Vegemite on toast, just a bit, with heaps of butter.

Vegemite---it tastes good if you don't smell it!

This, to me, is a proper Aussie Easter brekky.

The only thing that would balance it out more would be an ice cold beer. Hey, it's 5pm SOMEWHERE in the world!

Have a great holiday!

dude, that sign is too funny! you know, i've never eaten a hot cross bun... although i did learn how to play the song on the "recorder" in 3rd grade. my gut reaction to the poster was, "don't sell ol' jesus's buns short, i'm sure they coulda been mega hot." :-P

Hi Leena!

My hubby has a hot cross bun addiction.. He's been buying them since February and ordered 24 (2 dozen) from the local bakery to pick up the day before Good Friday.

He then commented that there would not be enough buns to get through Easter.

Hot Cross buns were reduced to $2 a six pack at our local Coles.. baked fresh that day.. Just getting rid of them all before being shut on Good Friday. I called hubby at work and he told me to get 5 dozen.. that's 60 buns.. for $20.. Half chocolate.. half fruit with peel.

So far this Easter (because I'm losing weight..but also because I have gallbladder and stomach probs at the moment)..I've had one hot cross bun.. spread over two days. A half one day with a cup of Macadamia coffee..and the same on another day.. very lightly spread with Devondale 50% less fat spread.

They're addictive! I used to smother them in lashings of proper butter.. sprinkle over icing sugar and then put them under a hot grill to kind of caramelise and bubble and froth. Wickedly delicious.

I'm so pleased that I've met a foreigner (ie. you)..who uses vegemite sparingly.. and thus.. you eat it..and don't hate it. I like it lightly spread too. Cherry ripes.. lovely.. but my weakness is for those coconutty balls called "Rafaello".. Mmm Mmmm.

I hope you've had a nice Easter! :-D

Christians with a mission - so earnest and yet so scary...

You could put the Cherry Ripe into the bun and heat the whole thing up in the oven...

Amanda~I concur. Jesus probably made some kickin' buns.

Maria~How funny...the other candy I got was Rafaello and Ferror Rocher!

Sweet Rosie~The thought had actually crossed my mind...although I'm not sure I could handle that kind of deliciousness all at once (the Cherry Ripe, not the Christians)!

Barred Owl~ Sweet. I will have to check it out. Thanks for stopping by!

oh my - first of all i love jesus - but as always leena - you bring out the cool (& food!) in all things & i will now and forever connect my j man w/hot cross buns. also, 'vegemite sandwiches' - you're too young to remember this, Lg - but throughout my childhood - & thanks to men at work - i've sung about these & never had a clue what the freak vegemite was - i now see the greater purpose of your venturing down under - finally! thanks lady! (love you)
