Amuse bouche: Pepperoni Not Artisan Enough?

Even though pepperoni is one of the most popular pizza toppings in the United States, many are surprised to learn that it is an Italian-American invention, not an Italian one. Pepperoni does not even exist in Italian culture, which is why many U.S. artisan pizza shops feature various salamis on pizza, but never pepperoni. Mario Batali’s Greenwich pizza shop, Otto, is one of the only in the country that makes artisan pepperoni for their pizzas.

Amuse Bouche: Restaurants Use Internet to Spy on Customers

Food-related websites, such as OpenTable.com, have made it easier for restaurants to keep tabs on their customers. For a stiff fee, websites like OpenTable.com will send the restaurants information about their customers, like what they ordered, what they like to drink, even whether they tip well or not. Some defend this practice by saying restaurants are trying to offer their customers a good experience, and this information helps them do so.

Amuse bouche:The end of pb & j sandwiches in school?

As food allergies become more common (4 out of every 100 children has a food allergy in the U.S.), schools have started considered banning the source, namely, peanut butter. Considering that the peanut butter and jelly sandwich is so iconic among Americans old and young, future banning of peanut butter at schools could change what our culture considers nostalgic.

Amuse bouche: 3 out of every 100 Americans has a food allergy

A recent study funded by the National Institute of Health and performed at Johns Hopkins University revealed that food allergies are a few of the most chronic diseases in America. Peanut allergies are the most common, followed by shrimp, eggs and milk. This study only counted people with severe allergies to four or more foods. It did not include people that are intolerant of foods, like celiacs, so the number of people actually suffering from food allergies is likely higher than the study revealed.

Leena Eats: Oaklands Kaiser Farmers Market

One of the main produce people at the market.

The Oakland Kaiser Farmers Market, held every Friday from 10am-2pm, is tiny, that’s for sure. But the few vendors it has are quality, like this organic family farm I stumbled upon from Watsonville.

More food porn after the jump.

Gastro Friday: Farmers Markets

I recently read this article on why farmers markets have been so popular in the U.S., and I found it really interesting. When you break it down, there are many aspects about farmers markets that are inconvenient, including the hours (typically day time, or over the weekend, when working folks can’t attend), the need for cash only, the expensive price tag and the ability to buy only what produce is in season in the area you live in. So why do people still enjoy attending? Why have farmers markets grown 300% in the past 15 years in the U.S.?
