Amuse bouche: 3 out of every 100 Americans has a food allergy

A recent study funded by the National Institute of Health and performed at Johns Hopkins University revealed that food allergies are a few of the most chronic diseases in America. Peanut allergies are the most common, followed by shrimp, eggs and milk. This study only counted people with severe allergies to four or more foods. It did not include people that are intolerant of foods, like celiacs, so the number of people actually suffering from food allergies is likely higher than the study revealed.

Gastro Friday: James Beard Awards decide food blogging & food writing equal

According to an October 22, 2010 Wall Street Journal article, “starting this month, the New York-based James Beard Foundation awards, the “Oscars of the Food World,” will no longer distinguish between online and print.” So future top awards for food writing can go to professional food writers or casual food bloggers.

Amuse bouche: Florida restaurants fight over Brooklyn water

A Florida bagel restaurant and a Florida pizza restaurant are taking each other to court because the allegedly, the pizza restaurant stole a water filtration system that makes their water taste like New York water, which is known to be pure and taste clean even without filtration. The pizza company wishes to keep using the water system, and blames the bagel company for trying to illegally patent the process that would “Brooklynize” the water they use. It has long been said that NYC pizza gets it distinct taste from the water.

In an apparent way of avoiding outside legislation the Grocery Manufacturing Association (GMA) and Food Marketing Institute (FMI) to matters into their own hands last week proclaiming a new “Front Label” nutrition labeling plan.  What do you think?  Would seeing 520 calories on your favorite hostess snacks front label change your mind?

Amuse bouche: The Fight for Cocoa’s DNA

Scientists have determined the complete DNA sequence of the tree that produces cocoa beans, an accomplishment that is expected to speed up efforts to assure a stable supply of chocolate that is not only better-tasting, but healthier. The only problem? Two major chocolate companies, Hershey & Mars, are trying to lay claim to figuring it out. The bonus is that cocoa farmers, candy companies and chocolate lovers will benefit from having two sequences of different varieties of cacao that can be compared.

An NBC-LA investigation revealed that several vendors at the local farmers markets were selling conventionally grown produce, some from other countries, as locally grown organic produce.

Amuse bouche: Happy Meal Toy Banned in San Francisco

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors recently voted to ban toys from kids’ meals, unless the meals meet high health standards set by the board. This includes limiting fat, sodium, sugar, and including a half cup of fruits and vegetables.

Amuse bouche: Brooklyn restaurant gets Michelin stars!

Michelin stars are given as part of a rating system for the Michelin restaurant guide, put out in major cities across the world every year. Typically, stars are reserved for restaurants in these major cities, so it was a surprise when the Michelin guide New York came out and a Brooklyn restaurant (Brooklyn Fare) that is inside of a grocery store received two Michelin stars. This officially makes the restaurant the book’s highest rated outside of Manhattan.
