Leena Gardens: Garden Rape–what is it, how to avoid it

Leena Gardens: Garden Rape what is it, how to avoid it

On the left, my budding basil plants, healthy and happy. On the right, what happens after a fat-ass animal rapes my basil crop--pure destruction.

Dear Mr. Skunk/Squirrel/Rabbit/Possum/Really Flexible Deer that could jump a 7 foot fence,

Thanks for raping my budding basil plant–the first plants I ever grew from seed since 4th grade science class. Thanks for waiting until my basil just big enough, just hearty enough for me to gaze at it longingly, thinking of future caprese salads and pestos, practicing patience so I could make it sure it got as large as possible and then–boom. Your fat ass took it all. Awesome. Thanks for that.

No really, I get it. I really do. You have a hard life being a wild animal. You get to be naked all the time in public and NOT get arrested, you can use the bathroom pretty much anywhere you like, and all of your food you have to kill or steal from someone else. You must be exhausted.

More letter and photos on how to save your plants from animal rape after the jump.

Leena Gardens: My first strawberry harvest

Leena Gardens: My first strawberry harvest

My first small batch of strawberries from my garden.

This is the first of my berry harvest, and although it is small, it was soooooooo good. These berries were sweeter than any store-bought berry I’ve ever tried, and were a deep ruby red on the inside, a really beautiful color.

Amuse bouche: Gardening tip #3

If you like to can fruits and vegetables as much as I do and use a boiling water canner, you probably use up a lot of water each time you can. I know I do. Instead of tossing that used water out, I like to save it for watering my garden that week. That way, no water is wasted!

Amuse bouche: Gardening tip #2

To prevent bugs from eating all of your berries this season, try spraying the berries with a mixture of soapy water. Bugs hate the taste, and as long as you wash the berries before eating, they are safe to eat.

Amuse bouche: Gardening tip#1

When planting tomato plants, place a few crushed, washed empty egg shells in the plot before adding the tomato plant and burying. The egg shells, when mixed with water, will provide extra calcium that will help prevent calcium deficiencies, which can lead to blossom rot, an enemy to tomato plants.

Leena Gardens: Moving a garden/Creating a raised bed garden

Leena Gardens: Moving a garden/Creating a raised bed garden

My strawberry plants. I grew these.

Hello! So since my last gardening post, many a things have happened. First off, I have moved to another apartment, which means I had to transfer my already planted garden from my landlord’s garden. In the midst of apartment hunting and moving, I ignored my precious container gardens, so I knew I wanted to replant those as well,. Thankfully, the new place has a private yard that gets some sun (not a ton, but 3-4 hours a day), so all I had to do was

1. Convince the husband to build a raised bed garden (I figured beer would help)

2. Figure out how to dig/make a raised bed garden, as well as how to transplant my tomato and strawberry plants (I figured I need to contact all my farming-obsessed friends in the Midwest, namely, Farmer Danielle).

Wanna see how I built my raised bed garden? A little elbow grease and whole lot of animal poo after the jump. Get excited.

Leena Plants: A Container Herb Garden! That she hopes not to kill!

Leena Plants: A Container Herb Garden! That she hopes not to kill!

All you need to plant a container herb garden: herbs, dirt, and sexy-ass gardening gloves. Warning: your hands may not look as sexy as mine do. It's a natural thing.

This will be the third year I have had my own container herb garden, and let me tell you, I’m a huge fan. They take very little work and give you tasty herbs all season long for the same price you would have paid at the store buying a pack of herbs that will die before you use them all. That’s a score in my book.

They aren’t all fun and games…you have to be careful not to water them too much or too little, not to let critters like squirrels get to them, cut them back when they get tall, and most importantly, guys, don’t rape your tiny herb plant for all the herbs it’s worth in one sitting, because it will die. And if you let your drunk chef friends anywhere near this herb garden, they will do just that. Right, Matt?
