I stumbled upon Pican a few months after my daughter was born. My husband and I were desperate for a night out without the baby, and once we had a babysitter, I did a quick yelp search and came up with Pican. Upscale Southern food? Done and done.

I became Pican’s bitch shortly after my first meal there. With creative twists on class Southern dishes, comfort food I crave on a regular basis, how could I not? They had me promising to do very bad things for another bite of their smoked brisket meatloaf. Smoked meat is my kryptonite.

Leena Cooks and Eats: Scenes from a Chili Cookoff

It's been a while, but Leena's Fifth Annual Feed Me Your Chili Extravaganza has risen again!

I didn’t always love eating chili. As the story goes, I overdosed on my mom’s chili at the tender age of 3 and got sick. The memory of this made me avoid chili for the next 20 years or so (I still can eat red kidney beans without gagging a little), until I went to culinary school and decided to try making a chili recipe I could actually stomach.

That was 2005, the year of my first chili cookoff, and this year is number five. The cookoff has followed me from Chicago to Australia to California, and has yielded some of the most interesting chilis I have ever tasted (like a kangaroo chili with Vegemite and a Thai chicken chili), and this year was no exception. The big surprise? Really delicious vegetarian chilis that were more than just beans and water!

It’s been a few months (and a baby) since I last participated in Iron Cupcake SF (January 2011, as a matter of fact). But with most of the baby weight and ALL of the gestational diabetes gone, I was ready to take on Iron Cupcake by storm. The monthly challenge: candy. Something I have made into an entire food group for the better part of my life! So I got to work creating my dream candy-inspired cupcake. So, I dreamed about it. Made grand plans with friends to go there while drinking too much wine. I never actually thought I’d go there, at least not any time in the near future, and then something awesome happened. I had a baby, and because the entire process (except the end result) SUCKED, my awesome husband got me a gift certificate to the mecca of all food places…The French freaking Laundry, people.

I’m putting this post up for sentimental value. The restaurant just closed at the end of July, and this meal was eaten at the beginning of May, just days before I gave birth. I was feeling large and slow at this point, pretty much praying daily that the baby would hurry up and get the eff out of my belly. The pork belly pictured above was delicious, especially with the runny egg, and I’m pretty sure I managed to eat most of this, even though I was sharing with two others.

So behold, one of my last meals out as a childless person. More food porn to come!

A Champagne mango, also known as manila, honey, and ataulfo mango.

Shortly after my daughter was born, my parents flew out from Chicago to California to meet her. While wandering through my neighborhood one day, my father excitedly came across a variety of mango that he called “juice mango”. Back in India (where he is from), there are several varieties of mangoes that were considered “juice mangoes”, meaning you could literally drink the pulp of the mango. As kids, my father and his brothers would purchase a juice mango on a hot, sweaty day and go to town, ending up sticky from head to toe and overflowing with fresh mango juice.

This particular variety was sold as a Champagne mango, and of course, my dad just couldn’t resist buying a few to juice at my house. A demonstration was in order!

During the past two months of my new baby’s life, I have been determined not to lose sight of the activities I loved the most before she arrived, cooking and dining out among them. Cooking has definitely been the more difficult of the two activities (Ever try opening the oven door with a baby strapped in a carrier across your chest? They come a LITTLE too close to actually falling in the oven.).

So I’ve been trying to eat out as much as possible, and one of my little excursions with the baby has been to Humphrey Slocombe, an artisan ice cream shop in SF’s Mission neighborhood. On this trip, I sampled their staple flavor, Secret Breakfast (bourbon and cornflake ice cream), which was surprisingly delicious. But the stand out? The tin roof sundae, which consisted of vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, candied peanuts and a sprinkle of Maldon sea salt.

The combination of the rich chocolate with the crunchy sweet peanuts and the hit of salt at the end is positively addictive. And if I didn’t have a baby strapped to me, you bet your ass I would have put some hurting on SEVERAL sundaes. The extra 10 pounds slows me down.

One of the last sweet things I ate–coconut cream pie tart at Tartine Bakery in San Francisco.

One of my last sweet treats before being diagnosed with gestational diabetes was a trip to Tartine Bakery in San Francisco with a friend. And even though I’m sugar-free for the time being, this was an awesomely sweet way to go.

We started with this coconut cream pie tart, which sounds decadent enough on it’s homemade tart dough and filled with luscious coconut pudding. But the bottom of the tart shell is filled with caramel and topped with a crunchy chocolate shell, and the whole shebang is finished with whipped cream and big old flakes of toasted coconut.

YEAH. I know.

I went for my personal favorite, an almond frangipane croissant.

This was the single most flakiest pastry I have ever–EVER had. Ugh. So damn good, and that’s before I even got to the middle.

Ohmagah. The sweet, nutty filling was the perfect surprise for me in the middle, amidst all that flake and buttery goodness. I seriously had flakes of pastry covering me from head to toe, even a bit in my hair. But it was so worth it.

And as soon as I give birth, I plan on making this my first treat back into the world of sugar. Hit up Tartine Bakery if you can!

Leena Eats: Gracias Madre, Her first ever vegan Mexican food in SF!

My first thoughts when my husband asked if I wanted to try a vegan Mexican restaurant were “hell no!” I mean, vegetarian Mexican is one thing, but why would you want to take out the cheese? The cheese is one of the reasons I love Mexican food so damn much.

Plus, it is really hard to find a decent vegan restaurant. You have so few ingredients to work with, it’s understandable, but vegan is not like pizza, where even crappy versions are not that bad. Crappy vegan is crappy, and what’s worse- you go home hungry. Was I ready to risk an entire delicious meal on trying a new cuisine?

Fuck yeah. But only after I located a proper, meat-filled taqueria near the restaurant. You know. Just in case I wanted dessert.

Leena Eats: Flora, a revamped flower shop in Oakland
The delicious and warm soup amuse bouche at Flora restaurant in Oakland. I want to say it was potato and leek, but don’t quote me on that. I just know it was unexpected and delicious.

Oakland Restaurant Week happened to fall over my birthday weekend this year, so I decided to check out Flora, a new restaurant in Oakland’s up and coming Uptown neighborhood. The restaurant is in the old Oakland Flower Depot, a beautifully restored Art Deco building decked out in dark blue tile with silver accents. Outside the building is a hood that is half revitalized, half dying. Inside the building, you are whisked away to the 1920s, with a gorgeous, elaborate bar and cheery yellow walls with old posters.
