So, I’ve been to Chelsea Grill once before for dinner. It was pretty good and moderately priced, so I was pretty happy with the experience. I went again for brunch with some girlfriends, and I have to say…meh. That’s it. Meh. Read the rest of this entry »

Leena Eats: The Holy Mole Cupcake from Bleeding Heart Bakery
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love me some Bleeding Heart Bakery. So when a good friend offer to pop on by my apartment on Saturday a.m. to share a Holy Mole cupcake from Bleeding Heart, I damn near peed myself in excitement waiting for him to arrive. Thankfully, we have scotchguarded the carpet for such occasions. Read the rest of this entry »
Gastro Fridays: Making the most of what you have
********************************************************************************** I’m at Blog Her Food ’09 in San Francisco! So enjoy this post that has nothing to do with it, but is just as riveting. And maybe eat some bacon. Why? Cause you deserve it, damn it. ********************************************************************************** Summer is over, but we are still in the heart of the growing season here in Illinois. My csa overflows each week with a bounty of veggies I can barely get to, and as I plan to move across the country, I find myself wanting to save money as much as possible. So this got me to thinking…what are the different ways to make the most of food you do have? As a regular csa person, I am constantly left with way too much produce that just goes bad, and it makes me feel awful to let all that organic goodness go to waste. But that goes for meat as well. Can I do more with that chicken instead of just roasting it and throwing away the bones? If there is one thing culinary school and growing up with cheapskate parents taught me (love you Mom and Dad!), it is how to get the most for your money when it comes to food. Also? I’m lazy. And crazy intelligent. I tend to use my brain to figure out how I can successfully be more lazy, even with cooking and baking. So if you are lazy too or have kids, here are a few tips I use to get me through the year with more money in my pocket, plenty of food in my mouth, and what is most important to me–more free time. Leena Eats: Lincoln Square’s Applefest- The Good, The Bad, and the Hungry
Applefest 2009: I came, I saw, I…did not eat any apples. The sad news: only two apple vendors at Applefest. Good news: Plenty of other stuff, like German food and paczkis and overly friendly giant animals. Holla. Read the rest of this entry »
Leena Cooks n Bakes: WWE’s Killer Peanut Butter Mousse Brownie Pie
I’m a whore for a good dessert, and lucky enough to have enough food blogger friends that inspire the hell out of me in that category. Case in point: Amanda Simpson, Queen of the food blogs What We’re Eating and Food Porn Daily. You might remember her from this post, or even this podcast. It isn’t a secret I likes me some Amanda. Ironically enough, Amanda doesn’t do dessert, but her better half does, and she created this to please his palate. The rest of the world is just damn lucky Tyler and Amanda shared their gorgeous food porn and recipe with us. Or doomed, depending on how you look at it, because once I saw a photo of her pie, I couldn’t not make it and hoard it all for myself. And maybe I stabbed my husband with a fork to keep him from eating the last slice. Maybe. Which brings to mind the question, Amanda: awesome food friend or enabler? Read the rest of this entry »
Leena Eats: Cupcakes from Bleeding Heart Bakery…and then sleeps. A lot.
Chicago is home to a bounty of cupcake-only bakeries, as you might remember from a recent cupcake test I performed. I enjoy most cupcake bakeries, but among the most daring and creative with their flavor combinations has to be a proper bakery, not a cupcake shop at all: Bleeding Heart Bakery at the corner of Damen and Belmont in Chicago. While catching up with a good friend, we decided to indulge in a few cupcakes from Bleeding Heart. Our choices for the day were the chocolate cupcake w/ peanut butter frosting, and a tres leches cupcake. And maybe a few pieces of chocolate covered bacon that were not photographed because I ate them in 3.5 seconds. Maybe. Read the rest of this entry »
Leena Cooks: Homemade Ricotta Cheese and a Kick-Ass Fritttata
I thought I was a genius when I first made pesto. Then I was CERTAIN I was a freaking genius after conquering an impossible marshmallow recipe. But I think I’ve outdone myself this time., cuz this time, I made CHEESE. FROM SCRATCH. And I barely had to do anything. Laziness + delicious gourmet cheese = the ultimate Leena recipe. But I’m no food genius. No, now, I know for sure: I am a food GOD. And modest to boot, bitches. Read the rest of this entry »
Gastro Fridays: Food lover w/ digestive issues: My Life as an Oxymoron.
I am a food lover who also happens to have digestive issues. I am an oxymoron. Not too long ago,I was sick and hospitalized. It sucked, but I like to think that everything happens for a reason. Here are my top ten reasons why getting sick rocked: 10.I got to eat my weight in lime jello. 9. Helped to shed those pesky five pounds I’ve been trying to get rid of. 8. Got caught up on all the old episodes of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. No she din’t! 7. Some call them invasive procedures, I call them getting to know you better. 6. Never-ending supply of ginger ale. 5. I had a REALLY good excuse for not getting my work done. 4. It was really fun to play “hide the bedpan” with my roommate…the one with the bladder problems. 3. PAIN PILLS, I mean, mashed potatoes. 2. Did I mention the lime jello? 1. The hospital room had better views of the city than my own apartment. Happy Friday, everyone! More foody posts next week! ~LTG!
Leena tries to eat, but is a big old pile of sick.
Whoa. WHOA! Where the ef did I go? Well, so glad you asked. For you see, audience, Leena was sick. Is sick. Sick enough to talk about herself in third person, at the very least. The sort of sick where they feed you crappy lime jello and then put up signs like the ones above that only make you cry. Let me tell you, it was four kinds of awesome. And although I am at home, I am still on the mend and the docs are still scratching their heads at what the ef is messing with my stomach. And on top of all of that, I have big, exciting news… Read the rest of this entry »
