Mike’s Night: One dinner party in anticipation of another

Mikes Night: One dinner party in anticipation of another
Ain’t no dinner party like a Leena dinner party cuz a Leena dinner party don’t stop…feeding you!

Happy New Year Eve, everyone! Last year this time, I was in sunny South Australia, battling 100 F weather and my first holiday dinner party. If you are reading this on NYE, I am currently preparing for my second NYE dinner party, and dare I say, it may rock even harder than before. Sure, it will be about 110 degrees colder than it was last year, and I won’t have my Oz mates with me. But I am one year older, one year wiser, and one step closer to a myriad of appliances and food toys. It is about to get epic up in here. Read the rest of this entry »

Potlikker? I don’t even know her! Mary Mac’s Tea Room

While visiting the relatives down in Georgia this Thanksgiving, I had the chance to dine at Mary Mac’s Tearoom. Not the most modern cuisine, but I was hankering for some good Southern food, and they delivered. Case in point: potlikker.

Potlikker? I dont even know her! Mary Macs Tea Room

A little cup of heaven.

I heart Blackbird

I have a confession to make. I have a food crush on Blackbird. I swear, I could eat almost anything from this place and be happy, and I know this after only dining here a mere three times. The only downsides to this restaurant are the tiny space (call me crazy, but sometimes, I just don’t want to sit so close to my neighbors that I can smell what they ate), and the high price tag, which prevents me from eating it EVERY SINGLE DAY. Other than that, it was perfect. My husband and I had the pleasure of joining some of his work friends for a Friday night dinner at Blackbird. Here are the beautiful, food porny details. Our amuse bouche, which I believe had a housemade sausage and date puree in it:

Santa must love me: Leena Eats Christmas 2008…twice.

I’m a lucky gal. I got some kick-ass food related xmas presents this year, and I got to eat two Christmas dinners. You see, every Christmas I go to my parents’ house for our family feast (which is very stereotypical middle class American but still delicious), and later that night, I head over to my Italian friend’s house to mooch off of his family leftovers. Two incredibly different dinners. Too many calories to bother thinking about. Sometimes you just gotta take one for the team. So. The presents. A honking big Le Creuset 7 1/4 qt from my amazing parents. It weighs as much as Shetland pony, and is probably big enough to deep fry one.

Santa must love me: Leena Eats Christmas 2008...twice.
My new pride and joy. I think I’ll call her Wanda.

Leena Eats Christmas Eve 2008

Leena Eats Christmas Eve 2008
This is how we roll, holiday style.

For our first Christmas together as a married couple, my husband and I spent it in Australia alone, away from both of our families and friends. While we missed our family traditions, we were surprised at how much we enjoyed the stress-free holiday. I’m sure the 80 degree weather helped a bit too. We agreed to spend at least one night together during the holidays focusing on relaxing and eating delicious food, so we had our own celebration on Christmas Eve this year. According to my mom (whose house I usually sleep at on Christmas Eve), that is not allowed to happen until I have children. Clearly, she was not aware of the beautiful steaks I had. And the fact that I hate sharing. Read the rest of this entry »

Getting ready for a fat white man to break into my apartment and leave me things

Getting ready for a fat white man to break into my apartment and leave me things
Leena, Adam and Nugget hope your holiday season is full of presents and delicious food.

If Santa doesn’t swing by my apartment this year, it is probably because in the short time it took him to park his sleigh and get his Venti Caramel Apple Spice from Starbucks, it was buried under several alternating layers of snow and ice, along with a few homeless people (hey, you can’t just leave presents around and NOT expect a few homeless people). Hey, Snow? We need to talk…

Hey, Snow? We need to talk...
My Aha! moment of the day: cars really AREN’T meant to drive on snow. Oprah would be proud.

Dear Snow, SCREW YOU. I’m sorry. Maybe that was too blunt. Let me try again. I hate you more than that Rachel Ray FHM photo shoot. No, that is still not quite right… I hope you turn yellow and melt a slow, painful, smelly death. There we go. Read the rest of this entry »

A lazy gal’s guide to baking away winter: Chex Mix

A lazy gals guide to baking away winter: Chex Mix
If this photo doesn’t make you salivate, something is wrong with you. And I don’t want to be your friend.

Not too long ago, I was reading an article on the least desirable cities to relocate to in the U.S., and my home town of Chicago was mentioned. It was listed in the section of the article that discussed how perception of a city could sometimes affect a person’s decision about relocating to it. After the article warned against making a decision based on a preconceived notion, it said, “Everybody thinks Chicago is Siberia when it comes to late fall and winter.” As if that was a preconceived, untrue notion. As if Chicago was in fact, a lovely place to visit in late fall and winter. As if the wind chill off of Lake Michigan that pelts against the face like icy daggers didn’t make people taking public transportation consider jumping in front of the bus or train at least twice a week. Leena Eats Healthy School Lunches…Again

Leena Eats Healthy School Lunches...Again
This what kids across the nation are eating in their lunches: frozen cardboard, I MEAN-frozen pizza. That tastes like cardboard.

Growing up in a small Midwestern town was certainly not a culinary experience. Surrounded by McDonald’s and Burger Kings, the most gourmet offering I could find as a kid was the Shamrock Shake. And I hated mint. Read the rest of this entry »

Leena Eats Fresh Voices for Fresh Choices

Leena Eats Fresh Voices for Fresh Choices

Okay guys, times for a little shameless self-promotion. This month, I am working on a project with Healthy Schools Campaign called ?Fresh Voices for Fresh Choices.? The goal is simple. In 2009, the Child Nutrition Act is up for reauthorization, and this act has the potential to create a future for school food in which fresh, healthy meals are the norm. It can also bring more resources to nutrition education and school wellness policies. We?d like all children to have the opportunity to eat good, healthy food at school ? but we need your help to make that happen! We are presenting a petition to president-elect Obama in Jan. 2009, asking him to make a healthy reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act a priority for his administration. We?d like everyone who cares about children?s health ? and about food! ? to sign the petition. To spread the word, we are contacting bloggers from different genres and asking them all to post blogs relating to school lunches (their most vivid school lunch memories, a healthy school lunch idea, what they pack for their kids. . . ), and have each one link to our petition so that regular blog readers can take action on this important issue. The blogging event, which takes place on December 10, 2008, is called Fresh Voices for Fresh Choices — because Healthy Schools Campaign is looking for new people to help speak up about the importance of healthy school food. Would you like to participate? If so, just create a blog post about healthy school lunches and plan to post it on Dec. 10. (Be sure to include a link to the petition!) Then, send a quick email to leena@healthyschoolscampaign.org. (I can send you images, badges and specific petition text if you?d like!) We?ll link back to you in our Fresh Voices for Fresh Choices blog roundup the next day. Together, we can spread the word about healthier school lunches for children across the country. Don?t want to create a blog post? We also have badges you can post on your website to remind people to sign the petition. If you have other ideas for spreading the word, let me know! Even simply posting a link to the petition in your Twitter update could bring us one step closer to a healthier school lunch program for our nation?s schoolchildren. I now return you to your regularly scheduled food blog. ~LTG!

Leena Eats a Slice: Ian’s Pizza Wrigleyville

Leena Eats a Slice: Ians Pizza Wrigleyville
Could the pizza make up for the location?

I’m a total pizza slut, and when it comes to slice shops, I go crazy. There is nothing better than a slice, topped how you like it, heated and melty, slightly crisp on the bottom—ugh. I would do very bad things for a proper slice of pizza. New York, now they know how to do a proper slice shop. But Chicago? For the longest time, the only slice shop in Chicago was Pizza-Ria, known for serving massive slices of just okay pizza. When my pal Amy went on for an hour about the new slice shop in Wrigleyville, I knew it had to be good—no one likes hanging out in Wrigleyville! At least, anyone who doesn’t fall into the frat boy-cubs fan category. But apparently, this slice shop was worth the crappy parking and obnoxious neighbors. These were supposed to be gourmet slices.
